Why skin slugging is not a good idea.

Slugging appears to be all the hype these days. But don’t jump on it just yet. Slugging is a term used to describe the practice of applying a thick layer of an occlusive moisturizing ointment, such as Vaseline, to the skin and then leaving it on the skin without rinsing it off, overnight.

While this can temporarily provide the skin with a feeling of hydration, is it really necessary to feel like a greasy mess all night? We think it’s not a good idea for several reasons and there are better ways to achieve the same result:

- It can lead to clogged pores and breakouts: Slugging can cause the pores to become blocked by the thick layer of product, leading to the development of acne and other skin irritation.

- It can interfere with the skin's natural moisture balance: The skin has its own natural moisturizing mechanisms, and slugging can interfere with these processes, leading to dryness and irritation.

- It can lead to an overuse of products: By applying a thick layer of product and leaving it on the skin, you may be using more product than is necessary, which can be wasteful and costly.

- It can cause skin irritation: Some people may be sensitive to the ingredients in certain heavy moisturizing products, such as petrolatum, which can lead to irritation or allergic reactions when used in large amounts.

Overall, it is generally better to use a moisturizing product in the recommended amount and to follow the directions for use on the product label. Less is more. Instead of going for a new fad and slugging, it is important to choose a product that is suitable for your skin type and needs.

Some options to consider include:

Face oils: Face oils, can provide the skin with a boost of hydration and help to lock in moisture without feeling heavy.

Face serums: Face serums are lightweight, easily absorbed products that can help to hydrate and nourish the skin. They can be used alone or under a moisturizer.

Moisturizers: Moisturizers, such as creams or lotions, can help to hydrate the skin and maintain its natural moisture balance. Look for a moisturizer that is formulated for your skin type (e.g., oily, dry, sensitive).

Face masks: Face masks can be a good option for providing the skin with a boost of hydration. Look for a mask that is formulated for your skin type and needs.

It is also important to remember to cleanse your skin properly before applying any moisturizing products, as this will help to remove dirt, oil, and other impurities that can clog pores and lead to skin irritation.
